Johnnys Italian Steakhouse: Johnnys Italian Steakhouse is reminiscent of Des Moines favorite supper clubs and its name pays tribute to two of the former clubs that were also named Johnnys (Johnnies Vets Club and Johnny & Kays). Waiters in black pants and white shirts, distressed dark hardwood floors and large upholstered wooden booths, black mosaic tiles, and private seating divided by heavy velvet drapery will welcome you into the past. A shaken martini in a frosted glass, the distinctive aroma of Italian specialties, charbroiled steaks and chops are just a few of the pleasures to be found at Johnnys. We went to Johnny's again on Saturday night, April 18th. Unfortunately our experience was nothing close to the visit we had on December 23rd. We arrived around 8:00 PM, well past the Dinner rush and therefore, I don't think the poor service can be attributed to being busy. Our friends arrived before us and were seated and served a beverage. After we arrived, our server RC, didn't recognize us for nearly 15 minutes...which made us feel uncomfortable since our friends had already been waiting for us and had their drinks. Finally after 15 minutes, he took our beverage order...another 10 minutes before receiving them. But neither time did he request if we wanted an appetizer....everyone was starving and honestly we would have ordered if he could have taken more than the 15 seconds he spent dropping off our drinks! Finally, after approximately 35 minutes of us sitting there, he decided to take our order....with the appetizer. We ordered the Bruschetta...fabulous...but with about 5 minutes to enjoy it until our meal came out....once again typically attributed to poor service. My wife had the Steak Deburgo and she said it was wonderful. I had the Fillet Oscar. The steak was a 3.5 out of 5, but the crab meat topping had an old fish flavor and definitely was not fresh. Our dinner bill was $92.22. The difference between and excellent restaurant and an above average is consistency. At this point I'd have to rate Johnny's South Side as a 3.5 out of 5 due to inconsistent service and food freshness.

Unbelievable experience. My wife and I chose Johnny's Italian Steak House on Fleur Drive, Saturday night, December 13th. While we did not have reservations, they gladly took our name and we enjoyed the very nice bar and cocktails while we waited a short 30 minutes for a table. Our meal and service was incredible. We both had the Fillet, Medium Rare. Although the two steaks had different texture and tenderness, they were both done very well. The bread is to die for and the service simply could not be topped in this category of a restaurant. Our total dinner bill with gratuity, a very nice bottle of Red, an appetizer, and the two meals was $165.00 Michael was our waiter and we highly recommend him. If you are looking for a signature restaurant on the South or East Side of Des Moines, I highly recommend Johny's Italian Steakhouse....you will not be disappointed!
