Gateway Market and Cafe: The Market Cafe at Gateway Market is a lively gathering place for our neighbors and beyond. The staff is friendly, reliable and eager to please. Nowhere in central Iowa will you enjoy such great food and fresh-brewed coffee in a casual and fun setting for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Or, visit the café for an afternoon snack to go with a relaxing glass of wine or a cup of espresso while you catch up on emails with our free wireless Internet.
Try signature dishes like our Gateway Omelet or House Ramen. Every sandwich is made with South Union artisan bread, baked fresh on site. Order for carryout if you need to get back to the office or rush home. The menu at Gateway Market Café is our expression of our love for the good food difference.

A few notes since my last posting.
They no longer offer discounts on the hot plate items after 8pm like they used to (would often go in to get some groceries, and purposely go late so i could get hot plate items for 50%.
They now offer online ordering, though sadly the 2 times i've tried it, though there site offers it, the orders have some as standard, and not with changes that were requested (for the gateway omellete i've asked for no tomatoes & changing the cheese, but each time it's came with tomatoes & gorgonzola).
Sadly since it's opened i've felt the quality of food has gone down. Portions have often been smaller and some of my favourite items (like the breakfast potatoes) have been changed (sadly not for the better).
1 good point, the chicken fried steak is the best i've ever eatten. I'm no expert on CFS having only had it from places like Village Inn/Perkins, and one time at Amana Colonies. But i would highly recommend it.

My favourite place to eat in Des Monies now. Went there the first time about a year ago to check it out, the european style market reminded me of home. The gateway omelette (chicken, bacon & gorganzola cheese) is the best omelette i've ever had, and great value when you compare it to the perkins/village in fare. Only thing i've had there that wasn't great (and i'm not saying it was bad) was the gyros sandwich, could taste it was frozen meat, and not fresh like from Saraj.
