Papa Chubby's Bar-BQ-Grill

305 SE Oralabor Road
Ankeny, IA
(515) 964-0684

We pride ourselves in doing things the old fashioned way and follow age old recipes passed down from generations. We hand rub and slow cook all our meats with great care and attention to detail. Larger cuts of meat, such as pork and brisket, are cooked overnight over hickory and apple wood, without being dried out. Our meats are cut to order and only shredded when needed as to preserve the quality of our hard work.

We make our own rubs and sauces, and we also sell our sauce in the restaurant.

I'm a lover of all things BBQ, and after seeing the positive reviews on this site decided to make the drive to Ankeny. Definitely not worth it! I guess if you live in Ankeny, it's marginally better than Bandana's, but the ribs and brisket were tough, the sauce was bland, and the prices stunningly expensive (the most expensive I've seen for BBQ in Des Moines; $8.75 for a pork sandwich? That's crazy!). Based on the fact that I was one of just a couple people in the store during lunchtime leads me to believe that more people agree with me than not. Plus my table was filthy, and there is no excuse for that in my book! mad

Perhaps you should read my reviews, Big Mike, before you accuse me of shilling for anybody. No, I'm not associated with Shane's Rib Shack (which I freely admit I love, and they've always been friendly, the food is consistent, and the prices are way less than perhaps YOUR RESTAURANT?!?, Papa Chubby's), or K.C. BBQ (to which I gave a good review, except for their cleanliness, and you'll note I'm rooting for them to reopen because they have the best burnt ends in town), or Jethro's (to which I gave a good review, except for their service which is terrible and I noted they were brand new). $8.75 is expensive for what you get. $10.50 for a quarter chicken is the biggest rip off in town; you can get a half chicken at Jethro's, with better sides, for $9.99. YOUR restaurant is more expensive than any other place in Des Moines. Prove me wrong if you disagree. And the place was dirty. Perhaps you should get out from behind YOUR counter and clean YOUR tables and lower YOUR prices? nod Do those three things, improve your sauce, and you'll be fine and I'll give you a much better review next time! Because I do love good BBQ.

I've gotta agree with drakefan regarding papa chubby's, i've only been there once, and found the food to be expensive. But saying that, i thought Shane's Rib Shack was expensive too though there bbq sauce, i would buy that by the gallon.

Got to say, in Texas, we get good BBQ. We also get the occasional lame place. I've had both. I've also noticed that BBQ is a very hard thing to make consistently. And it's NEVER as cheap as we WANT it to be. Sauce? Like steak sauce, I usually use BBQ Sauce to make up for inconsistencies in the cooking process (meat too dry, burned, or devoid of flavor).

Earlier this week, I went to Papa Chubby's, and found it to be quite good. I had the Big Chubby sandwich with the cheesy potatoes, and was really surprised that the place was much better than the online reviews I'd read. Atmosphere was good, food was well-made, and the staff was friendly. The place was clean and well-maintained. Maybe said review caught them on an off-day? Who knows. But it's good stuff. The Big Chubby sandwich was a meal I had to eat with siverware (not mandatory, but I didn't want to WEAR my lunch later at work!). Turkey breast, brisket, and ham on the same sandwich? You won't walk out hungry! And the cheesy potatoes are best HOT, so I don't recommend getting those "to go" - eat in.

So, in a nutshell, I rate my experience a solid 9 out of 10 stars. I WILL return if I'm on business there again.

Here's a hint: Call ahead for the hours of operation. First time I went was a late lunch at 2:30, and they were closed between lunch and dinner.

My wife and I went to Papa Chubby's once, and have not been back since. The food is expensive, the tables were sticky, and service below average. Plus, their sauce is terrible. The meat was pretty decent, but not nearly good enough to justify the price.

Of the 7 or 8 BBQ joints I've been to around town, I'd put Papa Chubby's at the very bottom of the list.
